Remembering Dr. Radhakrishna Singh

Today Dr. Radhakrishna Singh left us for his heavenly abode. Its a great loss to the academic circle of teacher educators in Bihar. He served as a lecturer in the prestigious Patna Training College of the Patna University for nearly a decade. He served as the principal of Virayatan B.Ed. College, Pawapuri for several years. He also served as  principal of some other teacher education colleges. Currently he was serving as the Principal of Mundeshwari B.Ed. College.

Dr. Singh had received his schooling at his native place, Cheria Bariarpur. His father was a very respected and famous teacher of the area. Dr. Singh received his Bachelor's, Master's and PhD from Patna University.

He was a famous student leader of Patna University. He led reservation movement in late 1980s along with late Janardan Hembrum, Nalin Pusphraj and many others. He was a very powerful orator and equally good at writing. His handwriting was extremely beautiful. I have never seen  handwriting better than his so far.  He published a number of literatures on various burning issues of the society in order to educate the common masses. He distributed these literatures free of cost. Few publishers were so committed to his ideas that they were always ready to publish for him. He never hesitated to raise his dissent voice against political, bureucratic and academic high ups.

Dr. Singh along with some other subaltern writers like Dr. Shiv Narayan Singh demolished the hegemony of few well entrenched Hindi literatures in Bihar. Radhaji was a symbol of dissent against the academic & intellectual hegemony of the dominant class of Bihar.
Radha ji represented the state in Vishwa Hindi Sammel held in Mauritius. Late Prof. Sachchidanand Singh Sathi, the well known academician and committed social acitivist was his mentor. He worked in close cooperation with Sathi ji. Dr.Pushraj who is now a Bihar government officer was said to be his 'hanuman' during their student activities at Patna University. Radha ji had a good understanding  of social, political, economic and educational fabric of the country and had the capacity to dwell over them for hours. He conducted hundreds of seminars and symposia on relevant and contemporary issues of Bihar in particular and the country in general. He was an academician who belived in popularizing the  progressives ideas on pressing issues of the society.

Dr. Singh was also a political activist. He was an active leader and associated with RJD. He also contested 13th assembly election of Bihar from Cheria Bariarpur constituency and lost election by less than 200 votes. Some people believed that counting was not fair otherwise he would have won the election. What ever the result of the election but it proved beyound doubt that Dr. Singh was very popular leader of his constituency. He was a down to earth leader.

Dr. Radhakrishna Singh was also the founding editor of a  Hindi Daily, Rashtriya Navin Mail published from Patna. The daily is not in publication now.

He was  very popular leader and known to all the well known politicians of Bihar. Perhaps he could not fit into the mainstream politics due to his straight forward nature and critical views about the politics and political issues.

Engineering mod had been the den of student activists of Patna University for several decades. This mod is a witness to the social and political activities of most of the prominent leaders of Bihar from 1970s to 1990s. Dr. Singh was the most prominent face of student activities uring late 1980s and early 1990s.

Dr. Singh is survived by his wife and a daughter. Radha ji is one among his six brothers. Two of his brothers have been my students at the Dept. of Education, Patna University and all are known to me. I had the opportunity to work in close association with Radha ji  since  1996. He was a proud member of this joint family.

Few years back Dr. Singh went through kidney transplant at a NOIDA hospital due to renal failure. The donor was his  wife. He took his last breath at 5:00 a.m. today. His sad demise is a great loss to the academia and activists of Bihar and personal loss to me.  May his soul rest in peace and give his family strength to bear the loss.
